As you may know, Rotary has been around for quite a long time - over 100 years in fact. What started as a place for professionals of diverse backgrounds to come together and form meaningful connections, is still going strong all these decades later. More recently, this global organization has added a humanitarian focus to their set of goals and encourages their members to engage, with boots on the ground, in their communities.
The SML branch of Rotary International was founded nearly 30 years ago. It provides members (who range in age from 31-85) with the opportunity to learn about area need, help raise money/partner with other non-profits, and get involved in some of the many group projects throughout the year. President Bryce Martin shares that our local club also has ties to charity work overseas for those looking to travel and serve abroad.
SML Rotary holds meetings during the lunch hour, twice a month, at Hot Shots Bar & Grill. They bring in speakers from a broad continuum of entities including: Beyond Boundaries, Smith Mountain Arts Council, Shoreline Management, Reel Connections, and the Bedford Humane Society. Some meetings consist of “project days” where they might all jump in to complete a task like assembling backpacks for local school children in need.
But don't forget the social aspect! Members enjoy meeting new people, business networking, and deepening friendships at all of the lunch gatherings and fundraising events, plus, an occasional get-together like the club Happy Hour coming up on Thursday, October 2nd at 4pm (also at Hot Shots). This would be a wonderful opportunity for anyone who is looking to plug into the community on a deeper level. All are welcome to come mix and mingle and discover if being a part of the Rotary could be a good fit for you!
