SML Woodturners

The Smith Mountain Lake Woodturners Club (SMLWT) is a chapter of the American Association of Woodturners and was established in 2004. At that time, the nearest club was the Blue Ridge Woodturners in Newcastle. Several local “turners” had begun meeting at Ed Moore’s shop in Burnt Chimney to practice their skills and enjoy the camaraderie- a big part of the wood working community. It was determined that there seemed to be enough interest in the lake area to support their own chapter, and they started meeting monthly at the old Scruggs Road Fire and Rescue building.

The SMLWT club is dedicated to promoting the art and craft of woodturning and has participated in Rocky Mount Farm Days, and, more recently, the SMAC Expo. Throughout the year, members donate some of their work to help raise funds for several charitable organizations including the Westlake Library, Beads of Courage, and the Empty Bowls project.

The club is open to people of all ages who are interested in learning! They now meet at the 4H Center on the second Thursday of each month at 7pm for around two hours. Yearly membership dues are only $25. There is usually a short business meeting followed by a woodturning demonstration. Feel free to contact one of their officers for more information.
