Parrot Cove Houseboat Rentals took to the waters of Smith Mountain Lake in 1996 with the Oliver family and their dedicated staff at the helm. The Hannah Lee launched in 1997, and all subsequent floating “boatels” in the Parrot Cove fleet have been named after fabulous family women. Each boat was hand-constructed from the frame up by David Oliver, his brother Ron, and a talented crew of two. During the off-season every year, three or four boats get pulled from the water to undergo a winter refresh.
The longer 53-foot boats sleep ten guests, and the smaller 39-footers: six. Large parties have been known to rent several at once - tying up together for a group trip to remember! Just think of all the fun occasions you could celebrate out on the water: family reunions, birthdays, graduations, bachelor/bachelorette parties, girls' trips, guys' trips, holidays, staycations...the list is endless!
Do you live on the lake and have a small-city-sized posse descending upon your abode? Consider renting a houseboat to tie up to your own dock. It will provide several beds, an extra bathroom, and even a bonus kitchen to help manage the crowd.
Personally, I love the idea of a themed weekend with a few of your besties. Can you imagine a gourmand gathering with foodie friends? Whether you are experts at cooking and pairing, or you hire a private chef and sommelier to join you on board for part of the journey… ahhhhh, that would be my idea of a really good time.
The magical part of houseboating, though, is waking up at dawn to a lake of liquid glass. Your companions: herons, eagles, and tree swallows. Your soundtrack: silence. Being on the lake as the sun crests the mountain is a beautifully sacred thing to behold.
Rental options are for: three, four, or seven days (you can view availability on their website). Now that we're over the end-of-summer hump, the rates have dropped for fall - and if they have a boat available, last-minute bookings are welcome! Parrot Cove Rentals is open for business April 1st - October 31st each year. Locals are encouraged to drop by the bridge office anytime. Staff members are happy to give you a quick boat tour whenever one of these long-standing fixtures of Smith Mountain Lake happens to be at home, sitting pretty in her slip!
