Birdies, Where Are You? | Indoor Golf Studio

Golf Pro Jason Brown brings a new simulator option to Smith Mountain Lake at his indoor Westlake studio, Birdies Where Are You?, located in the old Rooster's Rise and Shine Distillery suite.

Though he moved to the area just over a year ago to help care for his ailing mother, Brown has been vacationing here at SML his entire life. Golfing since the age of 11, enjoying a high school career on the links, and graduating from Campbell University's Professional Golf Management program created the perfect scenario for a tinge of burnout to creep in. Eventually, this caused him to take a short break from the game and pursue other paths post-college. 

But as it often does, absence made the heart grow fonder and he soon felt his passion for golf returning… Brown spent some time working at clubs (both here and in Richmond), and then, an unthinkable tragedy, the death of his grandson, occurred. This life-is-short wake-up call inspired him to follow his dreams and open an indoor golf studio. The name, Birdies, Where Are You?, pays homage to a phrase his late grandson would frequently say when he stepped outdoors, and of course, perfectly ties into the coveted score players are thrilled to achieve on any given hole.

My husband, a long-time golfer himself, recently visited the studio to play a few (virtual) holes at Pebble Beach. The hi-tech software includes over 100,000 different courses along with the capability to join a “tour” or play a virtual round with a friend who lives in another part of the country!

Besides the obvious fun (and weather flexibility) that the simulator bays afford, there is an extremely practical element available for those wishing to improve their swing. Instant video replay, stance, balance, and strike analysis, give you valuable feedback for making improvements.

Brown also offers 1:1 instruction, group lessons, tournament play, venue rental, and monthly memberships which offer deep discounts on rates plus extended access hours. My mind was racing with all the possibilities:

Membership is available to ages 18+, under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. You are encouraged to bring your own clubs, but there are some available to borrow, if needed. Reservations can be made online OR by calling the studio. When you arrive, Brown will be there to assist with the technology and help set you up for a perfectly customized experience tailored to your skill level, goals, and desires.
